'A Journey in Glass and Ceramics 2012' is an innovative exhibition on display at the Bede’s World Museum showcasing the work of University of Sunderland MA Glass and MA Ceramics students.
The exhibition introduces the works of ten students, who have drawn inspiration from the Museum and the surrounding landscape to create pieces of work that highlight traditional craft and contemporary art ideas in glass and ceramics. The exhibition provides a platform for the emerging artists to present their own interpretation of the site, as well as develop a greater understanding about the extraordinary life of the Venerable Bede (AD673-735) whose influences still remain today. The show also symbolises the journey of the students on the road to win their future in the world of art and academia.
All the work was produced in the University's state-of-the-art glass and ceramics studios based in the National Glass Centre. The work is made using a variety of traditional and modern techniques including glass painting, ceramic slip casting, water-jet cutting, glass blowing, glass casting, lamp worked glass, and glass fusing. This blend of traditional and contemporary seems fitting given that St Paul’s church nearby is the site of the earliest stained glass in Western Europe.
The National Glass Centre boasts the largest facility of its kind in Europe, comprising an international team of experienced educators and practitioners with diverse skills and interests. We have world-class facilities, including one of the largest kilns in the world for casting glass and a water-jet cutter. Find out more here: www.sunderland.ac.uk/glass_ceramics
