The Dark Glass is a series of 21 short films originally commissioned and broadcast in 2005 by Swedish television, as an interlude between their series of Format programmes. Each film shows the impact, explosion and dispersal of different substances, such as eggs and fruit, as they are thrown at a glass surface. Reminiscent of Abstract Expressionist paintings, they meditate on the sheer material of each substance.
Gaia Alessi & Richard Bradbury often create works that subvert what we think we know. They create playful and subtle observations of our understanding of our own surroundings. A space or situation may be disrupted in some way, a subtle shift or intervention, so the viewer is led away from the original purpose, instead drawing our attention to details and magnifying the relationship we have to our surroundings.
Gaia Alessi & Richard Bradbury are both based in London.
