Artist and senior lecturer at the University of Sunderland, Vandenhoucke utilises a range of materials including metals, fibre glass, paper and carpet, to extend her intense research into glass. Here she has taken her skill and experience of the ancient glass technique of pāte de verre (paste of glass) and created works that are both subtle and sublime. The results are frosty, delicate textures, studded with a pattern of flower-like shapes, as in Raw Target.
In the case of her new work for National Glass Centre, Vandenhoucke has manipulated glass fibre fabric utilising the most up-to-date glass-cutting methods – the industrial water-jet cutter at Sunderland University.
