Learning Gallery Exhibition
22 July – 28 August 2017
The National Art & Design Saturday Club is a Sorrell Foundation initiative providing 14-16 year olds with thirty weeks of free specialist art and design tuition at their local college or university. The programme is a national scheme that complements the school curriculum, develops young people’s talents, life skills and confidence and introduces them to further/higher education and careers in the creative industries.
Over the last academic year, thirteen young people from all over the North-East have attended Saturday morning workshops led by the University of Sunderland’s expert tutors and lecturers. Sessions covered drawing and painting, screen-printing, printing on glass, hot glass, ceramics and animation. The group also attended an inspirational master class with artist Dominic Wilcox.
This exhibition is inspired by the theme ‘Self Portrait’, and includes screen-printed glass, sandcast glass portraits, a collaborative animation and an accompanying risograph print backdrop.
This exhibition was also presented in the National Art & Design Club final show in Somerset House, London in June 2017. The work was shown alongside that of all other national institutions’ clubs, celebrating the young people’s achievements over the last year.
