Prof Kevin Petrie

 

Professor of Glass and Ceramics and Team Leader Arts

Known for his books, ‘Glass and Print’ and ‘Ceramic Transfer Printing’, Kevin has lectured and taught internationally. The main focus of Kevin’s research has been the development of new approaches in the application of imagery to ceramics and glass and the dissemination of this in a usable format to key interest groups. His artwork has focused on landscape and recently explores how direct drawing can be translated into lasting glass forms. Examples are held in the collections of the National Museum of Scotland and National Glass Centre. Kevin also makes drawings and paintings.

 

Kevin had curated several exhibitions including, ‘Erwin Eisch – Clouds have been my foothold all along’ (with Julia Stephenson) for National Glass Centre. He has also written on Eisch’s printmaking in his essay, ‘Windows onto our world – Erwin Eisch and Printmaking from Glass’ in the book ‘Erwin Eisch: Wolken waren schon immer mein letzter Halt. Glas und Bilder /Erwin Eisch: Clouds have been my foothold all along. Glass and Paintings’ published inMunich: Hirmer (In German and English).

 

Kevin has played a key role in the development of our research student cohort through his supervision and support of PhD students. His impact nationally in ceramics and glass PhD support was recognised in 2010 through the award of a National Teaching Fellowship. Since then Kevin has written a number of chapters for education books including ‘Craft Design’ in ‘The Design Students Handbook’.Edinburgh:Pearson Education Limited and ‘Blending approaches to teaching in art and design: Case Studies from Glass and Ceramics’ in ‘For the love of learning: Innovations from outstanding university teachers’, Palgrave Learning and Teaching. Kevin is a member of the Arts and Humanities Research Council Peer Review College and has been an expert reviewer for the Academy of Finland, Research Council for Culture and Society the Academy of Design and Craft, Gothenburg University.
