Walking

From Sunderland Rail/Metro station walk along Fawcett Street to Bridge Street.  Cross the Wear Bridge and at St. Peter's Metro station, turn right and either follow the riverside path or walk along Dame Dorothy Street and turn right at the roundabout after St. Peter's Church.

By Metro

Metro trains on the Airport - South Hylton line run to and from Sunderland every 12-15 minutes. Journey time from Central Station (Newcastle) to St Peter's Metro station is about 30 minutes. From the station, follow the walking route above.

By Bus

Buses from Newcastle include the 56 from Monument.  Buses from Sunderland include the E1, E6 and 19 from Fawcett Street.  Sunderland Connect buses travel between the University's St. Peter's Campus, Sunniside, Park Lane Interchange and the city centre.  For further information visit the Traveline or Stagecoach Bus websites.

By Car

There are 80 free car parking spaces with an additional 8 disabled bays. Overspill (pay & display) car parking is available in the nearby University of Sunderland car park.

We recommend that, unless you know the city well, when travelling from the North or South you should approach Sunderland by the A19.

From North (Tyne Tunnel/A19)
Depart Tyne Tunnel and follow A19 to Sunderland for approximately 4 miles. Take A1231 Sunderland/Gateshead exit and turn left at the roundabout (A1231 Sunderland). Follow brown directional signs to the National Glass Centre.

From South (A19)
Join A19 North and take A1231 Sunderland/Gateshead exit. Follow roundabout and take third exit (A1231 Sunderland). Follow the brown directional signs to the National Glass Centre.

From Newcastle Airport (A696/A69/A1)
Depart Newcastle Airport on A696 for 1 mile then join A1/A69 (South) for approximately 6 miles (past Metro Centre). Take first Sunderland exit, turn right at the roundabout and join A1231 to Sunderland. Follow the brown directional signs for approximately 4 miles to the National Glass Centre.

By Train

Regular services operate between Sunderland and Newcastle every 30 minutes. Travelling from the East Coast mainline (Darlington, Leeds, London, Edinburgh, and Glasgow) is via Newcastle, or a limited Grand Central service runs direct from London to Sunderland, as well as services from Middlesbrough every hour.  Visit the National Rail and East Coast websites for details. 

By Coach

National Express operates a comprehensive coach service to most parts of the country from Park Lane Bus Station in Sunderland.

Three parking bays are available in the National Glass Centre car park for private coaches. Drop off point is at the main entrance. Coach parking bays are located opposite the main entrance.
