Susan Moor, Sunderland

"When I trained as an illustrator, I wanted to add images to text. I learnt calligraphy partly to be able to add hand-lettered text to images. My work increasingly seeks to create text, lettering and images to make something more than any of these could express on its own. Working in book format allows a more sustained 'journey' through the pages, and I enjoy exploring the tactile quality of books.

Like a number of other artists who have worked this way, I am interested in communicating spiritual or philosophical ideas which are difficult to convey. William Blake, Tom Phillips and Charlotte Salomon have been particularly influential.

While I would still describe myself as a calligrapher, this seems to have far fewer limitations than it once did".
