Nick Renshaw’s sculptures are reminiscent of archaic finds or primitive icons, portraying ancient symbols clothed in armour, protective clothing or decorative garments. These ceramic humans, dreamers or friends, wait patiently. With their silent and still expressions they either have heads that are too large or bodies that are too small. They might wear a pointed hat, be glazed in pastel colours or covered with bright mosaic elements, clothing or body ornament. These familiar figures, with their ambiguous forms and expressions, are ideal objects on which to project one’s own emotions.
