Kelly Richardson: Pillars of Dawn

Kelly Richardson

NGCA exhibition

Preview: 28 March, 6-8pm

Exhibition dates: 29 March – 2 June 2019

Kelly Richardson is a Canadian artist who works with digital media to create hyper-real animations and video installations.

Pillars of Dawn is her first body of work realised both as a large-scale 4K video and as still images.

The series conjures a desolate, post-apocalyptic world in which every life form has been crystallised or carbonised –
except for a sequence of single, solitary trees that stand tall.

Richardson has worked with climate scientists to reimagine what our future as a species holds at a moment some are predicting the ‘sixth great extinction’in the history of the planet. Each is populated by several million individual crystals: roughly speaking, one forevery species still extant in 2018.

The exhibition is accompanied by a new book about the body of work published with Kerber, Berlin, with contributions from writers and
academics based in the US, Canada and the UK.
