Long Gallery Exhibition
22 October – 12 March 2017
This exhibition aims to raise questions about how we perceive issues of femininity expressed through art. For centuries the female nude has been an accepted subject for painters. How does this acceptability change when the naked female figure is the artist and the image is captured during the private and intimate moments of sleep? When an artist takes motherhood as a subject matter is the resulting work sentimental or a reflection of one of the strongest of human emotions? How are traditional domestic crafts valued within the wider visual art world? The work shown aims to raise some of these questions for discussion.
Artist, Effie Burns has worked with National Glass Centre to co-curate this exhibition featuring work by Erin Dickson, Katharine Dowson, Jennifer Halvorson, Alison Lowry and Louise Rice.
