National Glass Centre goes from strength to strength as it welcomes over 200,000 visitors – smashing visitor targets for a second year running and showing no sign of slowing down for Summer!
National Glass Centre was delighted to welcome its 200,000 visitor for the year 2014 – 15 this week, smashing targets for the year and solidifying its reputation as one of the North East’s most popular tourist attractions.
Since the Centre re-opened after extensive development in 2013, visitors have flocked to the attraction and the Centre has been delighted with the positive feedback it has received.
Michelle Daurat, Interim Director of National Glass Centre said “We are over the moon with the continued success of National Glass Centre. Our local visitors and people from further afield have been overwhelmingly supportive of the improvements we have made. Our aim is to become a source of pride for the local community, a place that celebrates Sunderland’s rich industrial heritage and nurtures its glass making future, a real cultural gem for the City.”
The 30% increase in visitor numbers, year on year, is down in large part to the increased family activities and glass making experiences that the Centre is providing, to get more local people involved in glass making and arts and crafts and this Summer is no exception!
Families can come along to National Glass Centre during the summer holidays and enjoy affordable, drop-in craft activities with their brand new programme of creative workshops for children of all ages! A new project, launched this year enables children age 6 and above to make a decorative glass fish using sand casting techniques. This is the first time National Glass Centre have been able to offer a hot glass making experience to children this young and it promises to be very popular with bookings already filling up.
National Glass Centre’s Brasserie is also running a series of monthly events involving live music, food and drink, these events are held on the last Friday of every month and bookings for their July Bourbon and Blues and August Gin and Jazz nights are now open.
